On the weekend of 4th-6th March 2022, 7 Patrol and Assistant Patrol Leaders along with 5 Leaders and 2 Young Leaders stayed on at the Warren after their usual Friday evening Scout meeting.
They had pitched their tents while the rest of the Troop, made pancakes and played games but now the younger Troop members had gone home it was their turn. After filling their bellies with sugary delights and chatting with the Leader’s it was off to bed.
It was a cold night, and the tents were covered in frost the next morning, but they were up bright and early to get breakfast on the go (Dutch pancakes 😁).
Ahead lay a series of tasks aimed to get them working as a team with minimal direction from the Leader’s. These included the building of catapults, problem solving, fire lighting, and teepee construction, with a game or two thrown in to give their brains a break.
The tasks tested not just their ability to work together but to bring out their Leadership skills. These activities took most of the day and hopefully they learned a lot. Three scouts made the evening meal while the remainder tidied up and set the tables ready for a tasty treat. The evening saw us all gathered around the fire, chatting and cooking supper over the coals.
Another cold and frosty night and again we were up early, after breakfast it was the Scouts turn to bring a new game or activity to the team. After some interesting and inventive offerings (some of which we might well use on a meeting night) it was time to pack up and get the tents down clean the building and grounds along with hoovering up the last of the treats left in the kitchen.
Many thanks for the commitment of my priceless fellow volunteers for finding time to help me work with these fab Scouts who make all the planning, paperwork, and shopping worth it.
Thanks to our Young Leaders who, having come through the Section choose to come back into the mayhem once again. Thanks for the continued support from parents and of course the enthusiasm of the Scouts themselves.
Pete, Red Troop Scout Leader.
